At Home & Outdoors with Paddy Dangerfield

A family-friendly outdoor entertaining area offers something for everyone – a place for gathering together, relaxing and playing. This was front of mind for AFL footballer Patrick Dangerfield and his wife, Mardi Dangerfield, when they were building their idyllic family home on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria.

We chatted with Patrick to learn more about the build of his outdoor oasis.

Q. What is it you love about the outdoors that made this an important part of the building project?

I love the fresh air and being surrounded by nature, whether I’m surfing or playing with the kids in the backyard. Living on the Surf Coast, creating a strong connection between home and the environment was essential when we were building. We wanted to ensure that our outdoor space felt just as welcoming as the inside of the house.

Q. What's your favourite part of outdoor entertaining?

Outdoor entertaining is one of my favourite pastimes. It’s the perfect way to enjoy fresh air and get everyone together for a laid-back meal. Having an outdoor kitchen means we do everything in one spot, from food preparation to entertaining, without the hassle of going between the indoors and out. Not to mention it’s an easy way to keep the house tidy, which is great because I’m a bit of a clean freak.

In the warmer months, we enjoy most of our meals outside and even a couple of meals a week in the colder months.

Q. Tell us your must-haves for the perfect outdoor space?

A fully functioning kitchen and a barbeque are a must - there’s something special about preparing a meal while overlooking the kids playing outside. Also, a plumbed sink makes a huge difference to keeping the space clean. A comfortable outdoor lounge to sink into, no matter the time of day and of course outdoor speakers to create atmosphere.

Q. Tell us a bit more about your Outdoor BBQ kitchen and why you chose Outdoors Domain?

I opted for the Cabinex Galaxy Black 6 Burner Outdoor Kitchen, which is perfectly tailored to our space and needs. The kitchen is matched with a Gasmate 6 burner BBQ and bar fridge.

I’m really passionate about design and had a clear idea of my vision, which is why Outdoors Domain seemed like the natural choice, you can pick and choose from a selection of products to suit the aesthetic of your home. The cabinetry is available in 3 colours, with additional benchtop colours available upon request. I sourced the stone for the benchtop that matches the fireplace inside the house.

The range is incredibly durable, and given we live on the water, we need a high-quality weatherproof kitchen that will stand the test of time.

The team at Outdoors Domain is second to none, they have been so helpful and efficient in bringing my vision to life.
